The residential swimming program at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) opened in 1981. The program's aim was to promote swimming excellence and provide opportunities for each of its elite (or emerging elite) athlete to follow both a sporting and academic or working career.
Swimming was one of the inaugural eight AIS sports. The swimming program was incredibly successful. In its first year of operation, AIS swimmers set 11 new Australian records. Since that time, AIS swimmers made up a significant proportion of all Australian swimming teams.

AIS Swim Team vision (1981)
All AIS athlete scholarships discontinued at the end of 2013. Responsibility for coaches and programs based at the AIS training facility transferred to Swimming Australia Ltd being the principal National Sporting Organisation.
Note: The AIS Athletes with a Disability (AIS AWD) program was a stand-alone program. A number of elite swimming athletes (including many well known Paralympians) participated in this program. Their contributions will be acknowledged shortly when this area is developed and released.
