1999

Summary

  • The AIS Netball Program changed its direction from a development program to the Elite Australian 21/U - AIS Netball Program. Current Australian 21/U Coach and former Australian Captain and Melbourne Phoenix Coach Norma Plummer, was appointed AIS Head Coach.
  • The AIS drew a series with Fiji in July, winning the first match 53-38 but losing the second 58-46.
  • The AIS were again runners-up in the Victorian State League narrowly losing the grand final 47-45. Cynna Neele won the Gwen Benzie's Award as the league's most outstanding athlete, and Sam Andrews won the Anne Clark Award.
  • Four scholarship holders were selected in the Australian 21 and Under team to tour the UK in November. The team was made up of AIS 2000 Netball scholarship holders and the four 1999 scholarship players.
  • The rest of the AIS squad also toured the UK, finishing runner up to Australia 21 and Under in a four team tournament, which also included New Zealand 21 and Under and England 21 and Under.
  • In a cliff-hanger match Australia, with eight former AIS scholarship holders in the team, won the final of the 1999 World Netball Championships against New Zealand in New Zealand.
