AIS Netball Program

1998

Summary

  • The AIS were runners up in the Dairy Farmers Victorian State League.
  • The AIS also played visiting international teams, the Americas and England. They beat The Americas in both games. Although losing all three matches in the series against England, the young Aussies played some hard and skillful netball.
  • The AIS players enjoyed big time exposure in matches against the Australian 21 and Under team prior to the Australian Open team's internationals. In the home Fisher and Paykel series Australia easily accounted for The Americas 3-0.
  • The AIS travelled to Singapore as sparring partners for the Australian team in its lead-up to the Commonwealth Games. Australia, with 7 former AIS scholarship holders in the team, won the first ever netball gold medal in a Commonwealth Games.
  • The AIS finished its year with a tour of Jamaica (5 November - 1 December) winning a three test series 2-1 against the Jamaican 21 and Under team.
  • Australia won a three match series against Jamaica, in Jamaica, after losing the first match. They then played two matches against Barbados winning both comfortably. Australia also won the Fisher and Paykel series including the Fisher and Paykel Cup in New Zealand 3-0.
