Introduction

The following describes and compares critical elements of the sports systems and performance profiles of nations that are considered to be Australia’s closest competitors in its aspiration to be ranked inside the top 5 nations at the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. They include Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

Countries such China, Russia and the United States are also included in the comparison. However, it is important to note these nations possess inherent competitive advantages in terms of their population and other factors that is beyond the reach of Australia’s resources and system capacity.
